Professor Stephen Holgate, the Westminster Commission for Road Air Quality’s Chair of Air Health, has been knighted for his services to medical research.
Covid-19 has not been an easy time. That is why experts who have played a key role in the fight against coronavirus have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
In light of the pandemic, the compilation of the honours list was postponed pending the nomination of people who played critical roles throughout the initial months of the Covid-19 effort.
Professor Holgate is a Medical Research Council Clinical Professor of Immunopharmacology and Honorary Consultant Physician within the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust.
Holgate has devoted his career to focusing on the interface between basic sciences and clinical application to improve our understanding and treatment of allergy and asthma. He is recognised as one of the top specialists in this field. He is one of the world’s foremost spokespeople on the dangerous impact of air pollution.
‘I am astonished to receive this honour,’ said Sir Stephen Holgate. ‘Looking back on a lifetime of research, translating biological science into human disease and then improving human health as a consequence has been a rewarding journey in its own right and I am truly most fortunate to have experienced this.’
