Yorwaste launches ‘in-cab’ camera system for increased safety

Commercial waste management company, Yorwaste, has fitted live camera recording systems to its fleet of vehicles to enhance safety and mitigate false insurance claims. The system also features a fifth in-cab camera, the footage from which can be used as evidence in any incidents.

Tom Richards, Service Delivery Manager, Yorwaste said: ‘The camera systems are beneficial for practical training purposes, enhancing our customer service by recording when bins are collected. In the case of accidents, they are valuable. A driver was accused of hitting a car while on a customer’s site in one particular case. The camera system was able to show the operator didn’t go near the car in question. It was actually another member of the customer’s staff that was guilty. The camera system saved valuable time as we didn’t need to carry out a full investigation and prevented our personnel member from worrying about any investigations.’

‘The in-cab camera is there primarily to protect drivers in the event of accidents. Only one person in the business is authorised to view the in-cab feed at Yorwaste, and it is only accessed if absolutely necessary. For instance, when a driver is accused of using a phone while operating the vehicle, we can easily check the recorded footage.’

The RXlite camera system from vehicle safety company Innovative Safety Systems (ISS) is now fitted automatically to all new vehicles as part of Yorwaste’s standard vehicle specification. The system provides real-time tracking and live video streaming in one and can be installed to different vehicles, so it is suitable for a mixed fleet.

Tom comments: ‘The product is very robust and the footage is very clear. The service from ISS is fantastic. The company is very proactive and quick to react.’

Yorwaste covers all of North Yorkshire & York from its network of six main transfer stations. This arrangement reduces its customer waste carbon footprint. It provides a full range of waste management services across the counties and manages the region’s 22 Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC). The company collects and oversees the disposal of multiple waste streams including dry mixed recycling, food waste, liquid waste, confidential waste, glass, cardboard and green waste, and skip and hook hire services.

Yorwaste is passionate about the local business community and has supported its customer base throughout the pandemic, proactively assisting those businesses that have been adversely affected through reduced charges and total flexibility within the collection schedules.

Stephen Perrin, Sales Manager, ISS comments: ‘We are delighted that Yorwaste has made our RXLite system part of their standard vehicle specification. The five-camera system is working well, and we are pleased with the positive response. We look forward to continuing working with Yorwaste which, like ISS, has an ethical approach to running business.’
